Feedback Requested: Consideration of New Sidewalk Along Portions of University Ave.

October 23, 2023 -- The City of Highland Park is considering adding a new sidewalk on one or both sides of University Avenue from Old Elm Road to Old Trail and on Old Trail to the west side of Summit Avenue, tying into the existing sidewalk on the west side of Summit Avenue (east and west on University and north and south on Old Trail). Please note that the City is not currently constructing a new sidewalk; at this time, public feedback is sought on the proposal to add sidewalk. A decision has not been made as the City is still in the investigation phase.

The proposed sidewalk is a 5-foot wide concrete sidewalk. The edge closest to the street would be 5 feet from the back of the curb. Therefore, there would be 5 feet of green space between the sidewalk and the back of the concrete curb. The sidewalk would be in the City’s right of way; no portion of the sidewalk would be on private property. The sidewalk would be ADA-compliant. Additional details may be developed if the project moves forward.

Individuals who would like to share feedback on this proposed infrastructure project should email publicworks@cityhpil.com and provide the following information by October 27, 2023:

  • First and Last Name
  • Mailing Address
  • Email Address
  • Phone Number
  • Are you in favor of a new sidewalk along University Avenue and Old Trail? (please respond yes or no)
  • Any additional feedback

Letters are being mailed to impacted residents in the subject area.

The City will include a summary of the responses and an update on this proposed project on its website and will email information about next steps to all respondents.

Please contact the City at 847.432.0807 or via email at publicworks@cityhpil.com with any questions, or if you would like more information.
