Resident Reporting, Police Investigation Leads to Vandalism Arrest

May 24, 2023 – On Friday, May 19, 2023, Highland Park Police began investigating a reported incident of antisemitic vandalism in northwest Highland Park. The report indicated that a receptacle had been defaced with blue painter’s tape in the form of a swastika, Star of David, and the word “Jew.” Subsequent investigation and increased patrols lead to the identification of a juvenile suspect. On May 23, 2023, the suspect was taken into custody. The City coordinated with the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office on charges. The Juvenile Court Act prohibits the City from sharing further information about the suspect with the public.

Quick reporting by residents allowed police officers to investigate and to identify a suspect. The Highland Park Police Department urges residents to quickly report any suspicious activity, including vandalism. Suspicious activity may be reported immediately to the police by calling 911.

The City denounces all acts of antisemitism and stands in solidarity with Highland Park’s Jewish community. The City’s Statement Against Hate details the City’s condemnation of any hate-motived individuals, groups, or behaviors. The Statement Against Hate is available at cityhpil.com.
