2021 Virtual 4th of July Celebration

2021 Fourth of July Fireworks Display Rescheduled for September 5

In April 2021, the City of Highland Park and the Park District of Highland Park announced the difficult decision to cancel Highland Park’s traditional 4th of July community events, including the 4th of July Parade, Fireworks, and FourthFest. Planning for the citywide Independence Day celebrations begins in January, as vendors must be secured well in advance of the holiday. Given the then-widespread community transmission of COVID-19 in late winter and early spring, as well as the then-limited number of available vaccine doses, it was difficult to predict what restrictions would be in effect by the summer. Fortunately, as Illinoisans continued to practice social distancing, wear masks, and get vaccinated when available, the State of Illinois progressively lifted restrictions until entering Phase 5 in June.
We are excited to share that the fireworks display, in conjunction with the Bitter Jester Music Festival Grand Finale, is planned for Sunday, September 5 at Wolters Field, and will be an opportunity for the community to come together safely over Labor Day weekend to enjoy one of the traditions we have missed over the last year! Further information will be shared via social media and eNews as details are finalized.

Bitter Jester Music Festival
The Bitter Jester Music Festival will host its Grand Finale concert on Sunday, September 5 before the fireworks, beginning at 3 PM at Wolters Field. Note that applications for the Bitter Jester Battle of the Bands will be accepted through July 10, and Highland Park bands are especially encouraged to apply. To participate, half of the band members must be 22 years of age or younger. Learn more about the Bitter Jester Music Festival.

4th of July Park District Activities
The Park District is planning a series of small, family-friendly events that will take place over the 4th of July holiday weekend including a virtual Firecracker 5K Fun Run, Walk or Bike event benefitting the Parks Foundation of Highland Park; a free Firecracker Family Boot Camp Competition;  Drive-In Movie Night at the Recreation Center; 4th of July family specials for rounds of golf at Sunset Valley Golf Club and the River’s Edge Adventure Mini-Golf Course; and an evening event at Hidden Creek AquaPark to float and watch fireworks on a big screen.
