Celebrating Bike Month!

May is Bike Month in Highland Park! The City Council recognized the importance of non-motorized transportation in our community with a proclamation marking May as Bike Month in Highland Park at the Monday, April 25, 2022 City Council meeting. Check out these special events to celebrate:

2022 Bike & Pedestrian Count
There's still time to volunteer to assist the Bike-Walk Advisory Group with the spring 2022 bike and pedestrian count. Collected data informs the goals in MoveHP, Highland Park's bike and pedestrian plan, and helps the City plan for future street and sidewalk improvements. Limited spots remain; sign up at cityhpil.com/bikecount.

SMART Cycling Class for Adults
Saturday, May 14 (9 AM – 12 PM, City Hall – 1707 St. Johns Ave., Highland Park, IL 60035)
Rain date: May 21

In this free, 3-hour adult class, learn how to safely and smartly bicycle around Highland Park. Learn to perform a pre-ride safety check and ride safely in traffic. Practice bike handling skills with cycling instructors, and participate in a guided ride through our downtown with experienced league cycling instructors. For more info or to register for the class, contact bikeonMay14@gmail.com. Class size is limited to 15 participants and pre-registration is required. Bring a bicycle in good working condition, a helmet, and be prepared to ride on streets. Presented by the League of American Bicyclists & the City of Highland Park.

Kiwanis Kids Bicycle Safety Clinic
Saturday, May 14 (10:30 AM – 12:30 PM – last lesson begins at 12:00 PM, Highland Park High School North Parking Lot)

These kid-focused bike safety lessons will help children understand the rules of the road, bicycle etiquette, and traffic safety. Children should bring their bicycle and helmet. Registration is required (day-of registration available) and parents may RSVP to bikekiwanis@yahoo.com. Note: Parent/guardian must be present. The event is free, but a $5 donation to support Kiwanis Children’s programs/Highland Park High School Kiwanis Key Club is appreciated. Presented by Highland Park/Highwood Kiwanis.

Stop by the Library during the month of May for free cycling information, including Smart Cycling guides, Bike Law wallet cards, Ask me About My Bike stickers, maps of the Family-Friendly Bikeway route and more!
