City of Highland Park Hosts Candlelight Vigil in Solidarity with Ukraine
Ceremony, flag raising will be held on Sat., March 12, 5:30 PM at City Hall

March 8, 2022 – In solidarity with the Ukrainian people and in support of Highland Park’s Ukrainian community, the City of Highland Park will host a candlelight vigil on Saturday, March 12, beginning at 5:30 PM at City Hall (1707 St. Johns Avenue.) The ceremony will include a moment of silence and a reading of the English translation of the State Anthem of Ukraine. Guests will be invited to join Highland Park’s Ukrainian community in singing the State Anthem of Ukraine as the flag is raised. The City has also illuminated City Hall in the colors of the Ukrainian flag.

“As we watch the crisis in Ukraine continue to unfold, so many in our community are feeling a helpless urgency to reach out to our Ukrainian friends and neighbors. During difficult times, we as a community come together to share our support. This Saturday, we will gather in support of the people of Ukraine as they defend their country against the horrific invasion by Russian President Vladimir Putin,” said Mayor Nancy Rotering. “In the powerful lyrics of their national anthem, Ukrainians sing, ‘The glory and freedom of Ukraine has not yet perished.’ Highland Park is proud to join the global community in saluting the heroic leadership of President Zelenskyy and all Ukrainians, at home and abroad, in defending their freedom.”

Parking will be available in the lot located adjacent to City Hall at the intersection of St. Johns and Hazel, and in the nearby Metra lot. The event will be livestreamed on the City’s Facebook page for those who are unavailable to attend in person.

The City encourages residents interested in supporting Ukraine to consider making a financial contribution to established organizations that are working to support refugees of this crisis. USAID.gov provides the U.S. Government’s humanitarian commitment to supporting Ukraine and its people in this current crisis, and is working with Ukraine, our European allies, and humanitarian assistance partners to meet immediate and growing humanitarian needs.
