Shelf Ice Safety

Shelf IceFebruary 14, 2021 -- Please avoid climbing and walking on dangerous shelf ice if walking near the lakefront. Shelf ice forms along the shoreline and can extend out over open water, often in snowy, icy mounds. People can easily fall through shelf ice into the freezing water below because they are actually walking or climbing over open water. It can be very difficult to climb out.

If walking along the lakefront, be very careful to remain on the sand, and teach children to avoid playing on these dangerous ice mounds. Do not attempt to stand or walk on ice.

Please note that the Public Works Department has closed access to the vicinity of the Water Plant at the Park Avenue Boating Facility for this reason and due to wind-blown snow and ice covering the parking lot east of the Water Plant.
