October 29, 2020 -- October marks National Women's Small Business Month, recognizing the contributions and achievements of women entrepreneurs and business owners across the country - including women-owned Highland Park businesses!
According to the Small Business Administration and data from the US Census Bureau (2016), over 1.1 million American small businesses with employees were women-owned, employing over 9 million individuals. When including businesses without employees, the total rises to 9.9 million women-owned businesses! 99.9% are small businesses.
Celebrated each October, National Women's Small Business Month also commemorates the Women's Business Ownership Act of 1988. This legislation created a federal advisory committee the National Women's Business Council, eliminated state laws requiring women to have a male relative or husband co-sign a business loan, and established the Women's Business Center program to provide business education and support to female entrepreneurs. Today, the Small Business Administration offers a wealth of resources for women business owners and aspiring entrepreneurs at sba.gov, including the Office of Women's Ownership.
