Safe Haven for Newborns

Baby Abandonment
Safe haven
Baby abandonment is a tragedy that is happening in the United States, and it does not have to happen. A Safe Haven for Newborns began in response to the tragedy of infant abandonment. The safe haven law is a safety net for both the mother / father and the newborn.

Instead of abandoning a newborn to an almost sure death, it allows mothers, fathers or whoever is in possession of an unharmed newborn, approximately seven days old or less, to leave them at a Safe Haven facility. The facilities include any hospital or fire rescue or emergency medical service station that is staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week. There will be no questions asked, and it's totally anonymous and free from fear of prosecution.

Objective
The objective of A Safe Haven for Newborns is to provide a mechanism and procedure for a newborn to be relinquished to a safe environment, and for the parents to remain anonymous if they choose and avoid civil and criminal liability for the act of relinquishing the newborn. The Highland Park Fire Department will accept and provide all necessary emergency care to a relinquished infant as we transport the infant to the nearest hospital.
