Where can I dispose of my fire extinguisher?
The Solid Waste Agency of Lake County (SWALCO) will offer a monthly drop off service for Fire Extinguishers commencing in April 2023. This will be a fee based service and will cover the cost of proper handling, storing and recycling of these high-demand amenities.
ANY SIZE Extinguisher will cost $3.00 to recycle.

At this time, the City of Highland Park does not have a recovery program available.
Where can I dispose of my sharps/needles?
The City of Highland Park now provides residents with assistance with the proper disposal of their sharps: hypodermic needles, syringes, lancets, and other sharp medical instruments. This program ensures materials are properly disposed of and prevents needles from entering solid waste streams.
To dispose of sharps, visit the Headquarters Fire Station #33 at 1130 Central Avenue during regular office hours, Tuesday – Friday, 7 AM – 4 PM.
Where can I dispose of my unused and/or expired medication?
The Police Department lobby, 1677 Old Deerfield Road, is open for the disposal of unused medications 24-hours a day. Residents are advised to make sure that all liquids are in tightly sealed containers. If returning pills without the bottle, please place them in a plastic bag. Drugs that are disposed of at local collection sites will be collected by the Highland Park Police Department and incinerated.
