January 16, 2017, from 10 AM – 2 PM
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is ‘what are you doing for others?’” Each year, Americans across the country answer that question by coming together on the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday to serve their neighbors and communities.
In the spirit of serving others, make Martin Luther King Day a day of giving back by attending the City of Highland Park’s 8th Annual Martin Luther King Day of Service on Monday, January 16 from 10 AM – 2 PM at the Recreation Center of Highland Park. Service projects are available for all ages.
Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White, will recount his experiences as a student of Dr. King. The Jesse White Tumblers, Highland Park’s Lynn Epps, and the Edgewood chorus will perform. Service projects include assembling toiletries for Hospitalized Veterans and the USO, creating Valentine messages for Operation Support Our Troops (Braeside PTO), decorating squares for Project Linus (Lincoln Service Club), adorning tablecloths for the USO (Wayne Thomas PTO), helping prepare soup packets for Moraine Township Food Bank (Red Oak PTO), designing book marks for Bernie’s Book Bank (Ravinia CARE Club), decorating and filling book bags for distribution at North Shore Health Clinic, and writing on the Rotary Club’s Community Service Wall to showcase the efforts that individuals selflessly provide to help others in and around our community.
Volunteers will be collecting donations for a variety of causes including toiletries and non-perishable food items for Moraine Township Food Pantry, glasses for Lions Club, instruments for Ravinia Foundation, toiletries for Veterans and USO, and bicycles for Working Bikes. Drop off donated items to the event between 10 AM – 12 PM. If you would like to volunteer for the event, please contact Marietta Stevens at email@example.com.
There will be onsite parking, with overflow parking available at Wolters Field. For more information, contact Terry Grossberg at firstname.lastname@example.org or 847.204.4815.
