Telephone Scam Alert

Local Police departments are investigating a series of telephone scams targeting the public. The scams often involve a telephone caller impersonating a family member of the victim or a law enforcement official calling on behalf of a loved one.

The caller often advises the victim that a family member or loved one has been arrested and needs money to get out of jail. In some instances the victim is asked to send pre-paid debit cards/gift cards or to provide the caller with the card numbers over the phone.

These types of calls are fraudulent; do not send money or provide any information. If you receive a call of this nature, contact the Highland Park Police Department immediately.

Protect Yourself!

  • Verify the caller's identity by asking personal questions that a stranger could not answer
  • Resist the pressure to act immediately
  • Call someone you know and trust to help verify the story
  • If you can't verify the story, call the Police on the non-emergency line to assist you
  • Avoid sending money by immediate overnight service. The scammer will have your money before you realize that you have been scammed
  • Avoid giving your credit card or bank information to anyone you don't know personally

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the Highland Park Police Department at 847.432.7730.
