To the Residents of Highland Park:

The City of Highland Park, in conjunction with Highland Park High School, will hold a community meeting on Wednesday, November 30, 2016 at 7:00 PM at Highland Park High School, 433 Vine Ave. This meeting will address current and future public safety initiatives to protect our community against violent and non-violent crimes. This meeting is open to the public, residents are encouraged to attend and ask questions. The same meeting will be offered on a future date in Spanish.

In addition, an overview of the November 10th shooting will be provided. We are fortunate to live in a community with a low crime rate. The incident on November 10 brought an element of fear into our community. While it is important to note that this was an isolated incident and the suspect is in custody, there is still an element of concern among residents and will be addressed.

By way of background, on Thursday, November 10, Highland Park Hospital staff alerted Highland Park Police that a 14-year old juvenile was being treated for a gunshot wound. The youth, a student at Highland Park High School indicated that an altercation had taken place in Highland Park earlier that day. Two juveniles were taken into custody with recommended charges of Mob Action. The person of interest, William Servin, Jr., was apprehended on November 13, along with two individuals who were charged in the shooting and three individuals who were in possession of drugs and firearms. All six adult individuals were charged by the Lake County States Attorney’s Office.

The City of Highland Park’s top priority is to provide public safety. As such, the City of Highland Park and Highland Park High School Staff work closely to ensure the safety of the community, school students, faculty and staff. A Police Resource Officer is stationed at Highland Park High School and works with students and staff to provide education on a variety of safety issues. With regard to the November 10 event, numerous proactive steps were taken to ensure public safety including early and regular communication to our community, which led to the apprehension of the suspect. The Highland Park Police will continue to work diligently to ensure that our community is safe.

Crimes such as this are rare. However, as always, residents are reminded to help by being watchful and are encouraged to report suspicious activity to the Police Department at 847.432.7730. In the event of an emergency, please call 911.

Wishing everyone a safe and Happy Thanksgiving,

Paul Shafer
