Car Burglaries, Stolen Vehicles and a Residential Burglary East of the Central Business District

On November 16 from approximately 1:00 AM to 3:30 AM there were reports of several burglaries to motor vehicles, two vehicle thefts and a single residential burglary in the 300 block of Central Avenue and the 400 block of Park Avenue. In nearly all cases, vehicles were left unlocked, keys were left inside the vehicle and the front door of the residence that was burglarized was unsecure.

North Shore communities have been targeted in recent months as criminals associate the area as a low risk, high reward endeavor due to the ease of entering unlocked vehicles and the possibility of getting away with valuable items and/or vehicles. In the past, there have been a few instances where the offenders would enter an unlocked vehicle and use a garage door opener to enter a garage and steal anything of value. The residential burglary that took place on November 16 was the first incident where the offenders entered a home and stole items while the victims were asleep.

The Police Department recommends residents take the following precautions in order to deter potential offenders and minimize their risk of being targeted:

·  Move anything of value out of plain sight when exiting a vehicle

·  Lock your vehicle at all times when it is not in use, especially during the overnight hours

·  Make sure your home is secure when you are either away or going to sleep for the night

·  Be aware of and report all suspicious activity

·  Join the City’s Neighbor to Neighbor initiative and have your neighbors assist in keeping an eye out for suspicious activity, you can learn more and register at www.cityhpil.com/n2n

The Police Department encourages all citizens and businesses to be aware of their surroundings and alert the police of any suspicious activity (non-emergency: 847.432.7730, and 911 for emergencies).
